Well, you can use the Texturizer filter in Elements to add texture. Those kind of look more "grunge." If you subscribe to Scrapper's Guide Premier (a great deal), this month's tutorials are all about making grunge papers like that. There are lots of ways (Linda cover's 4 in this months Premier).

Hi Laurie,
There are many, many ways to make textured and grunge paper like the ones you pointed out. Here's one of Linda's Tips of the Week that will allow you to create your own.

You can also use the burn tool in elements to grunge up your papers. As a matter of fact, Linda's video tutorials in this month's Premier newsletter will teach you how to make grunge papers.
If you aren't a subscriber to Premier yet, I'd highly recommend it!
Here's a sample issue so you can try it out...

I'm sure other folks will have some ideas for you to try as well.

Enjoy experimenting with the texturizing filter as you begin with Photoshop. Then try some of the other filters. Don't forget to take photos of textures that are interesting, because you'll enjoy using them in your layouts too.

The most 'painless' way I often use is to go to the bucket tool, choose fill with pattern, then choose the canvas and fill the document. Blending mode 'Overlay' or Soft Light' usually has the right look for me...
Canvas is my personal favourite out of the pattern that come with PSE5 but try any of them for the look you want.
