I teach PSE5 at our local Senior Center. During the last class one of the images we use to teach layers opened with additional icons next to the visibility icons in each layer of the layers palette. The ICON is of a brush.
I know in earlier versions of PSE this ICON existed but I have never seen it in PSE5.
Can someone tell me what is is and how I can get rid of it?

That icon of the brush indicates the active layer. I don't think I am understanding your question correctly.

On each layer (there are 6 layers) there is the visibility ICON column, then the brush ICON column, then the thumbnail of the layer. It doesn't matter which layer is active, it appears on each layer. I have never seen that Brush ICON in PSE5 before. I am thinking some type of MASK but I really am stumped.
It affected the ability to select multiple layers in the picture so that we could link 2 layers together.

Is it a brush or the chain link? Can you take a screen shot and post it to www.pixentral.com? What version of Photoshop or PSE was the original document created in?

Hi ...
In the earlier versions of Elements there was a brush symbol in the layers palette just to the left of the thumbnail ... It indicated which layer was the currently active layer but it was removed in PSE4.
Only thing I can think of is that you either redo the image you use in your class or maybe you could "Photoshop" the image and remove the brush symbol.
Alternatively why not just explain to the class that the images were done in an earlier verison of Elements so it no longer looks quite the same :)

I went back to our learning lab and checked out the image in question. I guess I should ALWAYS verify what one of my seniors says. She told me she was in PSE5 and I didn't think anything of it because that is what is installed on the PCs. When I went back and checked for myself, I found that the PC she was on also had PSE3 still installed and that is how she got the double columns to the left of the thumbnail on the layers palette. She opened up the wrong version. There were 2 shortcut icons on the desktop and she chose the wrong one. I have since corrected that problem.
I want to thank everyone for their help and next time I definitely will verify all my assumptions. I feel so dumb right now!
