How to do shading/shadows?

I know this question comes a little late, I finally got up the courage to post this question so here goes.

When attempting to do the December Challenge, I did fine until I got to the shadow part. When I clicked and drag the brush it wasn't like Linda showed on her video. I got oval shapes with "marching ants" it just wasn't shading.
HELP! Even thought I have PSE5 I still haven't quite got the knack of how to use the program.
I have all Linda's CD's couldn't find video instructions how to do it.
Need direction. Thank you,

Hi. I have PSC2,not PSE,but what your are describing sounds more like you may have the circular marquee tool selected rather than the brush tool.

You had the selection brush - you need just the "brush" tool.

Trish you are right I was using the selection brush. Embarrassed to say I did not know where the "brush" tool was, didn't realized it was where the pencil
was. Happy I now know what to do. Thanks again for your help.
