I had posted this in another thread and Priss suggested it might be helpful to post it here.
When you create or download a new style/brush/shape or whatever, it's a good idea to store it in a separate folder and not with the ones that come with Photoshop.
There are a couple of reasons for this.
First, if you get too many items in your Photoshop folder, it can really slow down loading of the program.
Second: You can backup the folder of your created/downloaded stuff separately. That way, if you have to re-install Photoshop, you don't lose all those add-ons.
I have a separate folder on my hard drive called Presets and in there sub-folders for brushes, styles, shapes, etc.
Then when you want to use the items in Photoshop - you can load the style (or brush or whatever) by going to the flyout arrow and click on Load Styles (or brushes or shapes - whatever it is) and navigate to where you have saved it.

I have a very similar set up ... its also makes it so easy to backup the things you have added, just in case there is a problem in the future :)

I do this too. I learned the hard way. Hopefully others won't have to.

Help. I downloaded a bunch of brushes and they are in CS2. Somehow I have some of the several times. It does slow things down. How do I remove them and save them elsewhere?
Thanks.

Hi Ann ...
Just go into your Photoshop Folder Presets>Brushes and remove them ... then simply start a new folder somewhere else and put them in there :)

Great tip, going to have to do this. I recently lost a lot of kits I had downloaded. Quite an expensive lesson.

When I was running PSP 7,8,9,10, I had separate folders set up for everything. I was very organized. Since going to PS CS 2 a year ago, I just haven't spent the time to figure the separate folders thing yet. Yesterday, when going to do the week by week assignment, I noticed all but about 30 of my custom shapes had disappeared. NOT my extra ones I added, but the ones that came with CS2. I did the reset thing and they didn't come back. Looked around my folders, but haven't found them yet. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAy too strange. Will have to spend some more time looking around to see what happened. It's always fun learning that's for sure.
While I have my kits and photos backed up, I never backed up brushes and that type of thing. Guess I'm not attached to any of them that much yet. Am sure once I get more creative, I will be. :-)

Thanks Wendy. I am going to get rid of them as soon as I post this.

More or less I agree but it's still not all clear to me.
