Hope someone can help...
I have been watching the video about embossing. I followed the instructions exactly and used the same ornament as in the video.

My question:
I double click on the design, click and drag the design on the paper, when I let go of the mouse, my design disapears. what could I be doing wrong?

thank you

digi, do you have a paper or something that could be covering it?

Hi Digi

I've tried to look for the tut you're using but can't seem to find it. Maybe my eyes are giving up like the rest of me :) If you can tell me where it is I will give it a try for you.

One thing does occur to me though. I have had this sort of thing before. I found that I had to make sure that I flattened the image first [Layer>Flatten Image] before I could successfully copy it over.

Hi Digi ...

Are you trying to drag the design from one image to another or within the same image ?

... and are you doing the Dec 2006 Ornament tutorial ?

Wendy :)

Hi! Thanks for helping...I am new here, as of only a few days, so it can't be far.
I looked ar the tutorial...it says Photoshop Elements 4.0 Volume 1
Digital Scrapbook Basics

it must be an introductory video before you buy

it is not an ornament, but an ornament shape #5 - fancy element

would it be because I have Photoshop CS that it isn't working?

thanks :)

I can list my steps if it would help

Hi Digi

Don't know what part of the world you are in but I am in the UK. It's midday right now but I'll have a look this evening to see if I've got this tut. If so then I'll work through it and see what happens.

Talk to you later.

Hi ...

Is this tutorial on a CD or did you download it from somewhere ... It sounds like it maybe from one of Linda's CDs

Wendy :)

this is a tutorial from on of Linda's cd's that is a sample to view before you buy
Photoshop Elements 4.0
Volume 1
Digital Scrapbook Basics

top of the video says...emboss_ps mov
she works with a peach page

I am now thinking...is it because I tried to do it in PSCS?

It has all the steps - last I double click on the design, then click and drag it across the page and I should be able to go on to embossing...I see the shape, but when I let go it dissapears.

Hi Wendy

Thanks for helping out. I was going to ask the same question - where is the tut? It's just as well you have Linda's CD because I don't have any of them at the moment.

Digi, it's because you are using the same color when you drag out the design, and YES it's supposed to be the same color --else it doesn't look like embossing. You can't see it--it's there, though.

Try it this way and see if you can't get the results you want
1) Create a new document color you wish
2) Drag out the custom shape tool with the shape you wish being sure that the color is the exact same as your background paper.
3) Rasterize this shape layer to make it editable pixels (right click>rasterize)
4) Ctrl+CLICK the THUMBNAIL on that shape layer to create a selection
5) Click on "F" icon at the bottom of the layers palette, and choose Bevel and emboss--now adjust to suit your project.
6) Ctrl+E to merge down and put the embossed beauty on the background.

Voile--- Yes???? Hope so!

And, if you could tell us exactly which video you are watching, I would research it for you if this doesn't work.

it is one that makes a fancy ornamental design

she calls it "elegant embossing"

I am going to try it in my pse and see if that is where it works/mayb not in pscs

- I don't know when to pick the color for my shape, it just comes out red, but won't stay...
I will go and try you instructions Priss and get back to you....

thanks,
here comes trouble...
sorry

Whew! I found it! Digi---you had me on a ROLL today! --wondering where in the thousands of "Linda" files I could find info to help you. AND I found that: This tutorial was written by Linda when she was still associated with Photoshop Elements User. If you are still a member there, this Embossing tutorial is still posted in the tutorials section, and is now "years" old. It's not a video tutorial, it is a posted "paper" one!

Now where you're stuck! --You pick your color right at the git-go, and then when you pick up the shape tool, (or the text tool) or any other vector tool, it will draw out your shape in the exact same color that is chosen as your foreground color when it's applied--and you won't be able to see it (but check the layers palette and there it is on a layer of its own). When you get to the Custom Shapes tool (not the marquee tool) steps in the lesson, don't make any changes in your foreground color, just be sure you are on the correct tool (the "U") tool and draw out your shape, rasterize/simplify it, then "emboss" it by applying the bevel option of the layer styles. (Whether program ==PSE or PSCS==works exactly the same way in both). It's a four stepper, create background, draw out custom shape, rasterize that custom shape layer, bevel. (merge)

Hope this helps--and post back if you need more assistance on this and BE SURE TO SHARE in your member gallery. ....

Sorry Priss...
Umm it is an advertising video and says if you like it buy.......

she is talking and doing on the video...

Ok, this is what it tells me

Pick a foreground color and fill

pick custom shape tool

double click

click and drag on your page ---THIS IS WHERE IT DOESN'T MAKE AN AUTOMATIC NEW LAYER AND THE SHAPE DOESN'T STAY THERE---as she is saying it does

then you are suppose to take off the shape color

Layer - rasterize - shape

Black Circle with f

Bevel and emboss

And Taa Daa!!
except I don't
Taa Daa

I don't want to make everyone crazy here...my goodness, I just started, I want to make friends. So, I really, really, want to learn this, but I can put it on hold if I have to. I can keep trying till I find my glitch.

I'm going nuts trying to find this video but until I do we can try some other things.

First try resetting your tools to their default settings: Click on a tool on the tool's options bar, and choose reset all tools. (Version 3)

Digi, from what you wrote above here, I want you to double-check that you are on the cUstom shape tool and not the marquee or the cookie cutter, which also have shape libraries associated with them.

Your tool's options bar's first icon should look like a language bubble, then there should be six or seven more buttons, then an area where it says "shape" and a picture with a dropdown arrow of what's chosen. The next five boxes should look like the FIRST one is selected. The next box is a color box where you can change colors. If it doesn't look like that, then you haven't picked up the right tool.

I have looked at that CD Training CD Vol 1 Digital Scrapbook Basics that you sent me the picture of the cover of. I cannot find that Elegant Embossing tutorial on it. Would you please see if you can recognize the name of the tutorial you are viewing when you go to that cd and open the "movies" folder?---then get back here to this thread, and don't worry--that's what we're all here for --to help you do what you're trying to do. I've jsut gotta get to the video you are viewing!

Priss~I opened up my pse 2 and the shape stayed on the page so...now I downloaded the pse 5 trial...maybe I will have luck in there!

When you say to reset under tools in cs, where is that located?

Thanks again

Hi Digi ...

I think I know what happened ... you were using CS2 and you didn't get a shape layer.

Well Photoshop has a few more options in the Custom shape tool than Elements has ... I suspect that you didn't have it set to Shape Layers.

Go back to CS2 and select the Custom Shape Tool ... then look at the top of the screen. Up at the top (just under the word Photoshop) there are three little symbols ... hover your cursor over them and they say Shape Layers ... Paths ... Fill Pixels.

Click on the one that says Shape Layers then try again ... hopefully it will work this time :)

There you go----Betcha Wendy figured out what it was--the way the tool was set. Hey--have fun with all three programs--you'll be amazed at how very similar they are. When you're running CS, just throw more tools in the mix--and in this mix--it would have been that you weren't on the basic tool--that you were on probably the paths tool. MAN I've done many times myself......don't feel alone!

Wendy you're a WHIZ!

Need to go and join the Premier Club! I was soooo focused on figuring this out! Whew!

Thank You!
