Resize a Page for Email

Open up the page you want to email. (File > Open) If your page is already open, save it one last time. (File > Save)

Click on the “More” arrow at the top of the Layers palette and choose “Flatten Image.”

Choose Image > Resize > Image Size from the Menu Bar.

Make sure Resample Image and Constrain Proportions (at the bottom of the dialog box) are checked.

Change the resolution to 72 ppi and change one of the sides to a smaller number, somewhere between 4 and 8 inches.

Click okay to accept the changes.

Your document will get really small. To enlarge your view of it, choose "View > Zoom in" one or more times until your page reaches100% size.

The 100% size is how your page will appear to your email recipient.

Whenever you “resample” or change the number of pixels in a document, your image will go slightly soft. To crispen it up a bit choose Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask from the Menu Bar.

Use the following settings: Amount: 20 to 50%
Radius: 1.0 pixel
Threshold: 6

Click okay to accept the sharpening.

Most people’s email can handle the file size of the jpeg image you just made, but if you want to decrease the file size even more , for someone on dial up, for example, choose File > Save For Web from the Menu Bar.

You get a gigantic dialog box with two photos. Look at the one on the right as you make your changes to see what is acceptable in terms of quality.

Under “Settings” (upper right of dialog box) choose JPEG, make sure Optimized is checked, and play with the Quality setting until you’re satisfied with how the second (optimized) photo looks.

Down at the bottom of the second (optimized) photo you’ll see the new file size and the amount of time it will take to download with a standard 56.6k modem. My original page with all its layers was 35.3M and I’ve reduced it to 94K!

When you click okay, you’ll get a dialog box that lets you choose where to save your duplicate jpeg image. Choose a folder and click Save. When you open your email program and choose the “attach” option, this is the folder to which you will navigate./p>

We still have our original page on the desktop. To close it, choose File > Close from the Menu Bar.

When a dialog box appears asking you if you want to save your changes, choose “Don’t Save.” That way your page will revert to its original size with all its layers intact.
